Wireless IP network operator Manchester Metronet is claiming a UK first with its implementation of a commercial ultra-fast “gigabit wireless” facility.

The gigabit service now forms part of its Manchester city-wide secure wireless IP network.

While unable to confirm which customers are using the back haul gigabit connection facility, Metronet’s business development manager John Earley said that the link is “being used to relay multiple video streams for a mission critical application”.

Manchester Metronet’s wireless infrastructure provides very high speed internet access to businesses throughout the Greater Manchester region using a mixture of wireless and fixed line technology.

The service is provided via internet backbone provider Telecity through its own fibre-optic ring, totally independent of BT.

Manchester Metronet counts Manchester city council and Greater Manchester Police among it existing customers.

This pair use the service to film DVD quality CCTV (25 frames per second) crime prevention and detection footage across the city.
