Microsoft has released SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 to further help users benefit from virtualisation and fully take advantage of Windows Vista and Office 2007.

With SP2, said Microsoft, Vista and Office 2007 can now easily connect to SQL Server 2005. The virtualisation usage rights in SQL Server 2005 have also been expanded, to allow unlimited virtual instances on servers that are fully licensed for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.

“SP2 delivers customer-driven improvements and new features that align with our data platform vision,” said Ted Kummert, corporate vice-president of Microsoft’s data and storage platform division.

“SP2 is a step forward in enabling organisations to bring the business intelligence capabilities of SQL Server 2005 directly to end-users in the tools they use every day.”

Key enhancements in SQL Server SP2 also include data mining add-ins for the 2007 Microsoft Office system, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) compatibility with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, and SQL Server Analysis Services improvements for Excel 2007 and Excel Services, among a number of other enhancements.
