A US start-up has launched a free service to allow users
to find out whether their credit card details and identities have
been compromised.
The StolenID Search facility has been launched by Californian
firm TrustedID, and allows users to check their
credit card details against a database of two million stolen credit
card numbers.
TrustedID has collected the stolen numbers and other details
from malicious websites and from partner security companies.
The service is also designed to allow users to find out whether
their US social security numbers have been compromised too, with
users being able to input these numbers along with their credit
card numbers on the TrustedID website.
TrustedID intends to increase the size of the identity theft
database over the coming months, which relies on users trusting the
security procedures of TrustedID itself.
The firm makes its money out of also selling identity protection
services to users.
