Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services and APD Communications have developed a road maintenance management system using GPS and GPRS that is set to improve the way roads are gritted and snowploughed this winter.

The application, dubbed Coldsnap, also promises to help the local authorities and utilities responsible for clearing roads by reducing paperwork and human error, and cutting compliance times by more than half.

The Coldsnap application links GPS location data with fleet management software and electronic mapping, meaning council supervisors will no longer need to go out on the road to check which routes have been cleared.
