BT has selected Nortel to
supply Carrier Ethernet products for its £10bn 21st Century Network
(21CN) project.
The 21CN will be a UK-wide IP-based network that will provide
new communications products to businesses and consumers. One small
part of the network has already gone live in a village near
Cardiff.
Nortel is to provide BT with carrier-scale Ethernet products to
transport high-bandwidth services such as mission critical business
applications and full-streaming video to users.
Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski said, “BT is using Ethernet
technology in a completely new way to provide an answer to the
challenge of simplifying network management, redefining service
quality and reducing costs.”
Carrier Ethernet is more flexible and scalable to use and less
expensive than traditional carrier network technology like SDH, ATM
and Frame Relay.
