Marks & Spencer first large user to commit to no more landfill dumping

Marks & Spencer has become the UK’s first large company to commit itself to stop dumping IT equipment in landfill sites.

The commitment to stop using landfill sites was announced alongside plans to make the business carbon neutral by 2012. Marks & Spencer also plans to overhaul its supply chain so that twice as much food is sourced from the UK within the next 12 months.

Every IT department in the UK has to return electronic equipment to companies that will dispose of the goods without damaging the environment. IT users have to comply with the WEEE regulations by July this year.
Marks & Spencer’s chief executive Stuart Rose said, “We will become carbon neutral, only using offsetting as a last resort.”

The retailer plans to cut its CO² emissions by 80% – the target set for British businesses by last year’s Stern Review of the consequences of global warming.
