The government is to close 551 of its websites and
create larger, one-stop sites.
The move is part of the ongoing Transformational Government
project, and aims to make it easier for citizens to find the public
sector information they want.
Only 26 of the government websites examined so far by the
project are certain to be retained.
Relevant information from the closed sites will be transferred
to the www.direct.gov.uk and
www.businesslink.gov.uk
websites.
Pat McFadden, minister for transformational government, said,
“We are dealing decisively with the proliferation of government
websites by getting rid of more than 500 of them. We are ensuring
that the quality of our services will not be affected by these
changes.”
The decision to close the websites is outlined in a
Transformational Government progress report
now available from the Cabinet Office.
