The John Lewis Partnership is spending £45m on a
new distribution centre for its 27-strong department store
business.
The investment includes an £18m contract with Austrian logistics
company Knapp to run the distribution centre.
The warehouse management system that will run the new centre is
being supplied by Knapp. The logistics company will also supply
automatic stacker cranes, goods-to-man systems, conveyor systems
and pick-to-light technology.
John Lewis’ supply chain director, Patrick Lewis, said, “This
development gives us the space to increase the scale of our
business and allows us to provide a better service to shops and
customers at a lower cost.”
The new centre, which will be built at Magna Park in Milton
Keynes, will handle the smaller items that are sold in the
department stores. John Lewis’ existing distribution centre at
Stevenage will be reconfigured to handle the larger goods sold by
the chain.
The 184 Waitrose supermarkets that the John Lewis Partnership
also owns are supplied by separate distribution centres.
