A wireless networking supplier claims to have overcome a
problem faced by the process manufacturing industry, namely the way
metal blocks prevent wireless network traffic from reaching its
destination.
Emerson Process Management has built a
“self-organising” wireless network based on Smart Wireless
technology, which re-routes wireless signals as often as necessary
to complete a transmission.
This differs from traditional point-to-point wireless systems,
where if a signal is blocked by an obstruction, communications are
often blocked as well.
Emerson will demonstrate its networking technology for the first
time on Thursday, 11th January in Bologna, Italy.
The supplier said that the wireless technology will give big
operations, such as oil refineries, access to new and previously
unattainable data at around 10% of the cost of traditional wired
digital automation.
