The worldwide total of broadband lines reached 263.8
million at the end of September, with a total of 16.9 million lines
added over the quarter.
Figures from analyst Point Topic show that the world's total of
DSL lines reached 173 million, with 10 million lines being added
over the quarter.
DSL still dominates the market with 65.6% of the broadband lines
installed, outstripping technologies such as cable modems and
fibre.
Eastern Europe was the region with the highest broadband growth
in Q3, with growth of 12.7% in the third quarter. The region's
market share increased from 2.6% to 3.5% over the year.
Coming second in growth terms was the Middle East & Africa
region (MEA), with a quarterly growth rate of 11.9%.
Other regions, such as Latin America, also performed well in the
quarter. Western Europe and South-East Asia were the only two
regions to report a drop in growth rate in the period.
The fibre market continues to grow at a rate of 12.6%, almost
twice as fast as cable modem technology, reaching 27
million subscribers at the end of Q3, said Point Topic.
