Servers are guzzling 4% of UK energy

Monday 11 December 2006 12:00

Servers are having a major impact on UK electricity consumption, research undertaken for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has found.

The research, conducted by the Market Transformation Programme (MTP), found that servers were responsible for more than 4% of the UK's total commercial electricity consumption in 2005. MTP projected that server energy consumption is on course to increase by more than 180% between 2006 and 2010.

MTP product manager Robin Murray said, "We want to encourage the use of more energy efficient servers in the UK to reduce carbon emissions."
