Servers are having a major impact on UK electricity
consumption, research undertaken for the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has found.
The research, conducted by the Market Transformation Programme
(MTP), found that servers were responsible for more than 4% of the
UK’s total commercial electricity consumption in 2005. MTP
projected server energy consumption to increase by more than 180%
between 2006 and 2010.
MTP product manager Robin Murray said, “We want to encourage the
use of more energy-efficient servers in the UK to reduce carbon
emissions.”
MPT’s finding are expected to figure in the UK government’s
energy white paper, due out in the spring.
“Server power consumption is an area of concern because overall
energy consumption is similarly expected to increase rapidly over
the next 10 to 15 years,” Murray said.
