UK leads European ITIL adoption

The rate of ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) business practices adoption within European enterprises is high and the UK leads the pack, according to independent research commissioned by BMC Software.

BMC said the results demonstrated a growing appreciation of the benefits of ITIL in aligning IT with business objectives.

The research, conducted by Market Clarity on behalf of BMC, revealed that 70% of the European firms surveyed were aware of  ITIL. Of this group, 56% had implemented some element of ITIL within their business. 

Asked about working within an ITIL-based IT organisation, 77% said the implementation had met their expectations, and 62% said they would recommend ITIL to their peers.

The key benefits of implementing ITIL were cited as improving IT and business alignment (54%), greater productivity (51%), and ensuring best practice (53%).

The UK and Germany led the pack on ITIL adoption, with 63% of those questioned in each country reporting extensive implementations in their companies. They were followed by Spain (38%), France (33%) and Italy (18%).
 
Ken Turbitt, global best practices director at BMC Software, said, “Trying to promote ITIL to the board on a standalone basis will meet with resistance, but positioning ITIL as a key element of aligning IT with the business goals and objectives of the organisation will see an instant return.”
