Most human resources managers give greater weight to work experience than professional qualifications when filtering candidates to fill IT posts, according to new research.

Seventy-two out of 100 HR managers interviewed by recruitment consultancy Vanson Bourne said that relevant experience in an IT department was more important than qualifications for the same skills.

An even larger number of HR managers warned that applicants lacked the basic business skills needed to perform the jobs that they were applying for.

Some 83 HR managers said that the applicants needed additional training in communications skills, management ability and general business awareness before they could be brought up to the required standard.

The survey also heard that 30 of the HR managers kept their IT departments out of the recruitment process altogether.
Vanson Bourne was commissioned to do the survey by IT services company FDM.
