Microsoft is today launching its Windows Vista operating
system and its Microsoft Office 2007 suite for large
businesses.
The official launch will take place at the Nasdaq stock exchange
in New York today, and Microsoft is keen to promote the different
aspects of the software that differentiate them from previous
offerings.
Sanjay Parthasarathy, corporate vice president with Microsoft’s
Developer and Platform Evangelism Group, said, "While the new IT
and end-user features of these products get a lot of attention,
there’s also a lot going on with the underlying platform that
creates new opportunities for developers and independent software
vendors to build applications and grow their businesses on the
Microsoft platform."
He said, "The release of Windows Vista is really critical to
extending the capabilities of web-based applications due to
breakthrough innovations to the underlying infrastructure in the
.Net Framework."
On the Office front, Parthasarathy said, "There’s a lot of
excitement around the new capabilities in the 2007 Office system
which is a culmination of our 'Office as a platform' vision."
In the last two years, said Parthasarathy, developers have
increasingly wanted to use Office as a front-end platform to
support mission critical business systems.
A new user interface and additional extensibility will help in
this area, said Parthasarathy.
He said new security and manageability features in Windows Vista
will also please customers.
The general release for Vista and Office 2007 will be in early
January.
