Robbers steal chips worth millions

Armed thieves have stolen computer chips worth millions of dollars from an air cargo terminal in Malaysia.

The Penang theft is expected to lead to thousands of extra computer chips entering the processor black market, which is already burgeoning in Asia.

Many of the stolen or faulty chips that reach the black market end up in PCs destined for Europe and the US.

Local newspaper reports say the stolen chips were worth up to $13m (£7m), although it is not known at this stage whose chips they were.

Both Intel and AMD, along with other major IT companies, have facilities in the Penang area.

The 20 robbers overpowered security guards with weapons and chloroform before making off with the cartons and pallets containing the chips.
