Manchester court jails MP3 cash machine scammer

A man has been jailed for 32 months for attaching MP3 players to the backs of free-standing cash machines and stealing customers’ cash card data.

The stolen data was then used to clone their cards, which were used to buy £200,000-worth of goods, a court in Manchester heard. Working with accomplices, Maxwell Parsons, 41, of Gorton, Manchester, attached the MP3 players to the backs of cash machines in bars, bingo halls and other places.

It is the first time such a scam has been recorded in the UK. The MP3 players were able to record customer data as it was read on their cards and transmitted via a phone line to banks.
