Investing in the professional development of IT staff is
one of the key planks in creating a professional organisation,
according to the IT suppliers organisation Intellect.
New guidelines from Intellect, published as part of a
cross-industry drive to raise standards of professionalism in IT,
conclude that it is essential for organisations to value their
staff.
“The UK’s ICT industries make a substantial contribution to the
quality of our lives and the prosperity of the nation. They are
also a major employer and exporter. However, these industries and
the people they employ are often perceived as lacking
professionalism,” said John Higgins, director general of
Intellect.
Employers should develop and value the knowledge and experience
of staff, and encourage them to develop external skills
accreditations and qualifications, and to join professional
groups.
Companies should encourage employees to openly discuss work
related ideas and concerns with managers, and, if issues are
unresolved, provide a mechanism for taking the issue to someone
outside their direct management infrastructure.
