BT is struggling to fix a major outage in its national
broadband network, which has been ongoing since yesterday
afternoon.
The company reported outages in specific parts of the country,
and confirmed yesterday evening that the outage affected
unspecified numbers of users nationwide. It initially reported
problems in the Chippenham, Balfour, West Woodburn and Manchester
and Swinton phone exchange areas.
Yesterday evening a recorded BT message on its helpline said the
outage was affecting users nationally. This morning, a BT helpdesk
engineer told Computer Weekly that it was expected that it would
take about four hours to solve the problem.
A BT statement on its broadband helpdesk website, added at 10am,
said, “We are currently investigating a problem with broadband
access and you may currently be experiencing problems connecting to
the service.”
BT added, “We request that any users experiencing these problems
to please power cycle their router [unplug all leads from their
router and reboot] and again attempt to reconnect. Please bear with
us as we endeavour to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile we apologise for any inconvenience.”
Last month, 100,000 Orange broadband customers were left with no
service for up to two days as a result of a network outage.
