Seagate ‘encases’ hard drive security

Seagate Technology has launched a new security platform to protect data on hard disc drives.
Seagate’s DriveTrust Technology combines fully automated hardware-based security with a programming foundation designed to allow users to easily add software applications for encryption key management, user authentication and other security measures.
Seagate claims that the platform will free IT organisations from having to distribute software updates and reduce costs because drive-level security does not require patches, updates or upgrades.
DriveTrust Technology works by "encasing" the security features in the hard drive, so that the security technology is deployed along with the drive.
The security platform automatically protects all data on the drive, but its functions operate independently to preserve the hard drive's performance. Information stored on DriveTrust Technology drives can be instantly erased, so the drives can be redeployed or retired.
Seagate has also released a software developer kit to enable developers to build applications based on the technology, such as access controls for encryption key or password management.
