Sony has joined the recall of its own laptop computer
batteries, adding its name to the list of laptop manufacturers
calling in the batteries as a fire risk.
The company is initially planning to recall 90,000 batteries in
Japan and China, with no numbers given so far for recalls elsewhere
in the world.
Sony is also considering whether to adjust its full-year results
forecast in a move that is understood to be prompted by the huge
recall programme and reduced prices for the PlayStation 3 games
console.
"We are in the process of deciding whether a revision of
full-year earnings is necessary,” the firm said.
Laptop manufacturers have now recalled about eight million Sony
lithium-ion batteries after a small number of fires caused by
overheating.
The recall programme has led Toshiba, Hitachi and Fujitsu to
consider seeking compensation from Sony for damage to the
reputation of their brands and lost business.
