EMC aligns Documentum ECM with Microsoft
EMC and Microsoft this week strengthened their alliance around
enterprise content management (ECM). As part of the alliance, EMC
will introduce two new content and archiving products that enable
tighter integration between Documentum ECM and Microsoft Office
SharePoint Server 2007, Microsoft Office 2007 and SQL Server 2005.
Users will be able to access the Documentum repository natively
from within Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft
Office.
Documentum support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is scheduled to
be available this quarter. EMC Documentum Content Services for
Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 and EMC Documentum Archive
Services for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 are scheduled to be
available during the first quarter of 2007.
It's not clear at this stage how Microsoft's support of the XAM
(extensible access method) specification, which provides a
universal data access interface, affects this work with Documentum.
If, as is eventually envisioned by the XAM group, applications like
SQL Server will eventually write directly to storage systems, there
would presumably be no need for middleware like Documentum. John
McCormick, vice president of product management, Content Management
Software, at EMC was not aware of the XAM specification.

U.S. DOD builds mammoth SAN
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is finishing the deployment of
a storage backbone with more than 17,000 Fibre Channel (FC) switch
ports, according to Brocade Communications Systems Inc., which is
supplying the switching fabric. Brocade is claiming that the
storage area network (SAN), which will support multiple subfabrics
and multiple petabytes of storage, is the largest ever built.
NetApp supports 10 GigE
Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp) announced 10 Gigabit Ethernet
(GigE) support across the company's high-end and midrange product
lines. Both the FAS3000 and the FAS6000 platforms were "10 GigE
ready" when they were announced. NetApp has tested the
functionality with 10 GigE switches from Foundry Networks and
Cisco Systems, and with iSCSI software initiators for Red Hat
Linux, SUSE Linux, Sun Solaris 10 and Microsoft Windows
environments.
In a separate announcement, NetApp announced that it has shipped
its 10,000th SAN. NetApp SAN deployments include 3,000 FC SANs and
7,000 IP SANs. IDC's Storage Tracker also shows that NetApp
continues to hold first-place position in the iSCSI market in terms
of revenue and capacity in both the second quarter of 2006 and the
first half of 2006. Market share for the second quarter of 2006 in
terms of capacity shipped at 44% and in revenue at 28%.
Adaptec updates Snap Server line
Adaptec Inc. announced three new storage systems, the Snap Server
110, 210 and 410, which will include the GuardianOS operating
system, the same software platform that runs on the midrange Snap
Server product line. This means the smaller boxes can now offer
unified block (via. iSCSI) and file support, as well as optional
applications for data replication, disk-to-disk backup and disaster
recovery. Previously, the remote/branch office and small and
midsized business (SMB) Snap Servers had run a different, now
retired software platform called SnapOS. The Snap Server 110, 210
and 410 scale from 160 GB to 2 terabytes (TB) in desktop or rack
mount formats and are priced between $500 and $3,000.
The Snap Server 110, 210 and 410 (640 GB) are currently available.
The Snap Server 410 in configurations of 1 TB and 2 TB will be
available by the end of the year.
IBM, Avokia set record for long-range database
clustering
IBM and Avokia Inc. announced they have developed a long-range
database clustering technology, which is the first of its kind to
link active data servers located thousands of miles apart. The
active-active database clustering system was created for
Espressocode, a software provider for the freight and customs
industries. The installation combines IBM's new DB2 9 "Viper" data
server, Avokia's apLive database clustering software and
Espressocode's Exdocs logistics management software to continuously
synchronise databases located roughly 2,500 miles apart in Toronto
and San Francisco.
Sanbolic clusters HP SMB boxes
Sanbolic Inc. demonstrated its Melio Cluster File System and
LaScala volume manager with the new Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP)
All-in-One Storage System for SMBs. The clustered file system (CFS)
would allow end users to aggregate multiple HP All-in-One Storage
Systems, presenting a single file system and namespace for file
serving and/or a large iSCSI storage pool. HP's All-in-One system
was announced two weeks ago. The NAS/IP SAN box, which integrates
features of Windows Storage Server 2003, starts at $5,000. No
customers of the clustered configuration were available, according
to Sanbolic, as the combination was only tested and certified by
both companies last week.
Skoda Auto dedupes with Diligent
Diligent Technologies Corp. and SIT, a value-added reseller (VAR)
partner located in the Czech Republic, announced that car
manufacturer Skoda Auto deployed Diligent¹s ProtecTier virtual tape

appliance with the Teneros Disaster Recovery Appliance for
Microsoft Exchange. Like the local area network (LAN)-based Teneros
Application Continuity Appliances for Microsoft Exchange, the new
Teneros Disaster Recovery Appliance protects against Exchange
outages across the wide area network (WAN) and continues email
operation in the event the primary site goes down. The box also
performs administrator-initiated failback. The next step for the
