Councils could save £54.4m a year if they consolidated
their property data using the National Land and Property Gazetteer
(NLPG) – a standardised database of property information supplied
by local government.
The potential benefit from the NLPG was calculated by the Centre
for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) following a survey of 30
councils.
The CEBR estimate assumes that the NLPG data is used to improve
all council services and that the councils stop using any other
sources of address data.
The study did not estimate the potential benefits to users of
council services if councils used NLPG as their sole source of
data.
Some councils have already standardised their address data using
the NLPG. Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council has consolidated more
than 100 sets of property data into just one set that it has made
available through its intranet to 10,000 employees.
