Fujitsu has joined a string of other laptop
manufacturers in moving to replace Sony battery packs after fire
hazard warnings.
The move follows the recall of nearly seven million Sony laptop
batteries by Dell, Apple, Toshiba, IBM and Lenovo. The recalls
began when Dell and then Apple issued warnings that the batteries
could be a fire risk.
IBM and Lenovo joined the recall last week, a fortnight after a
fire in a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop at Los Angeles airport caused
panic amid fears of a terrorist attack.
As the number of recalls mounted Sony announced a general recall
of all potentially affected batteries supplied to laptop
manufacturers.
The firm issued a statement pledging a global replacement
programme “in order to address concern related to recent
over-heating incidents”.
Fujitsu has now opted to join Sony’s replacement programme,
although the laptop manufacturer said, “As of this time, we are not
aware of any instances of battery pack problems involving Fujitsu
notebook PCs similar to those that have been announced by Dell and
Apple Computer.”
Fujitsu will offer replacements of Sony-made battery packs in a
series of its laptop models.
