Where to look for information regarding the Sony battery
pack recall
Sony Corporation has begun a global replacement programme for
battery packs containing Sony-manufactured lithium ion cells used
by notebook computer manufacturers, in response to concern at
recent incidents in which they have overheated.
The fault is caused by microscopic metal particles in the
recalled cells which could lead to short-circuiting. Sony said a
battery pack will simply power off when a cell short circuit
occurs.
However, under certain rare conditions an internal short circuit
may lead to cell overheating, and potentially fire. This potential
can be affected by variations in the system configurations in
different notebook computers.
