Nokia and Intel have joined forces to deliver long-range
wireless connectivity in laptops.
Nokia has
developed an HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) connectivity
module for notebook computers, which Intel will sell to notebook
manufacturers as part of its next-generation Intel Centrino Duo
mobile technology platform.
The
connectivity module will be widely available as an embedded option
in a variety of notebooks.
HSDPA is
around three times faster than 3G and has a longer wireless access
range than the Wi-Fi technology currently offered by Intel’s
established Centrino mobile access solution for laptops, as it
works on mobile operator networks and not within short-distance
Wi-Fi hotspots.
Heikki
Tenhunen, head of Nokia's connectivity module business programme,
said, "This collaboration is good news for notebook users as
cellular technology offers superior connectivity and mobility for
notebook and other portable device users.”
Dell and
Lenovo were among the first laptop makers to announce their
intention of launching HSDPA-equipped laptops, but that was before
Nokia and Intel launched their own HSDPA module.
The
Nokia/Intel solution will support shared 3G, HSDPA and Wi-Fi
access.
