Panasonic is the latest laptop manufacturer to recall
faulty batteries.
The company has recalled 6,000 batteries for laptops sold in
Japan during 2005, and follows mammoth recalls by both Dell and
Apple last month.
Dell recalled 4.1 million batteries and Apple recalled 1.8
million. Both companies used batteries supplied by Sony which posed
a potential fire hazard to users.
Panasonic has not disclosed the source of its faulty batteries,
but has said it is not Sony.
IT managers are fearful that other laptop manufacturers that use
Sony batteries may declare faults following the Dell and Apple
recalls, but so far no other recalls have been made.
Panasonic recently announced that it would be closing its car
speaker system manufacturing plant in Port Talbot, South Wales,
with the loss of 240 jobs.
Manufacturing will instead move to Asia and Slovakia to cut
costs.
