Fujitsu launches next-generation mobile hard drive

Fujitsu has launched its first hard disk drives that use perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to deliver enhanced storage capacity.
The company has unveiled its MHW2 BH series of 2.5-inch hard disk drives (HDDs) for mobile PCs.
PMR is magnetic recording technology that supports next-generation high-capacity hard disk drives. Magnetic charges are aligned perpendicularly on the media surface.
Traditional longitudinal recording is used in the majority of hard disk drives today. Magnetic charges are aligned on the same plane as the conductors, which is also known as surface recording.
The two new Fujitsu PMR models are the 160GB MHW2160BH – which Fujitsu claims has the industry's highest storage capacity for a 5,400 rpm HDD – and the 80GB MHW2080BH.
They will both go on sale to the industry in October this year. The company aims to ship six million units of the two models.
Fujitsu says it ranks third in 2.5-inch HDDs for mobile PCs, with 21% of the worldwide market.
Seagate, Hitachi and Toshiba already sell PMR hard drives.
