In the largest-ever computer product recall, Dell has said it
will recall 4.1 million of its notebook PC batteries because they
can overheat and catch on fire.
The lithium ion batteries, manufactured by Sony, were used in
Latitude, Inspiron and Dell Precision notebook computers shipped
between April 2004 and July 18, 2006. The recall accounts for about
19% of the 22 million notebooks Dell sold during that time period,
according to reports.
Notebook batteries and power supplies are among the most
frequently recalled computer products.
Images of burning Dell laptops were displayed on the internet
for several weeks before Monday's recall.
Dell said customers can go to
www.dellbatteryprogram.com for more information
and recommends that users remove the battery from the notebook
and use the power cord and adapter to run the computer. Do not
dispose of the battery.
