Swindon has the UK’s highest broadband penetration rate,
with 51% of households there having broadband
connections.
In a survey of broadband connection rates by research group
Point Topic, it was found that other towns with high broadband
penetration included Watford, Wokingham, Milton Keynes and High
Wycombe – all in the south east with relatively well-off
populations.
Point Topic said Swindon was well served by both DSL and cable
broadband infrastructures.
It found that broadband penetration rates were much higher when
NTL’s cable network was competing with fixed line phone services
from BT and others.
Merthyr Tydfil, Dundee and Carlisle were towns with some of the
lowest broadband penetration levels. But rural areas in Northern
Ireland and Scotland had the lowest take-up of all.
The UK’s highest broadband penetration rates are:
Swindon - 51%
Wokingham - 49.3%
High Wycombe - 48.7%
Milton Keynes - 48.5%
Watford - 48.4%
