IBM has launched a free set of Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) software tools and training
resources.
The move is aimed at speeding the adoption of RFID technology by
addressing a key barrier – businesses’ shortage of RFID skills.
IBM has been stepping up its involvement in RFID technology,
developing a new Electronic Product Code Information Services
(EPCIS) standard with partner T3Ci aimed at helping companies share
information through the supply chain.
It has also developed a “clipped tag” system to limit the
distance a RFID tag can transmit information, in a bid to address
consumers’ privacy concerns.
IBM’s new launch includes an educational toolkit aimed at
increasing developers’ understanding of how RFID works, how to
develop RFID enabled applications and best practice.
The computer giant is also offering a graphical tool that allows
developers to simulate how an actual RFID project could help their
business, and a tool to help create applications that interact with
RFID systems.
The new materials are available through IBM’s alphaWorks emerging
technologies website.
