Sun Microsystems has appointed a new chief information
officer as Bill Vass moves to become president and chief operating
officer of Sun Federal, the unit set up to target US government
business.
Vass will be replaced as CIO by Robert Worrall, who worked under
him as vice-president of IT. John Marselle, former chief operating
officer at Sun Federal, is to retire after 20 years at Sun.
Before moving to Sun in 2001, Vass worked in the US government
sector, most notably as a director at the US Office of the
Secretary of Defense, where he was responsible for the IT strategy
deployment and execution for three sectors of the Department of
Defense IT infrastructure.
Sun Federal has also appointed Anthony Robbins as vice-president
Federal sales. He comes to Sun from SGI, where he was senior
vice-president of worldwide sales.
Vass and Robbins will join Scott McNealy, chairman of Sun
Federal, who stepped down as chief executive of Sun Microsystems in
April after the struggling firm posted the latest in a series of
quarterly losses.
In July Sun posted another $301m (£172m) quarterly loss, with
the company taking a $228m charge to cover restructuring costs
linked to the axing of up to 5,000 jobs.
