Pay rates for interim IT directors have increased by
more than a third to £80 an hour to meet the surge in demand,
research has revealed.
The figure from the iProfile Skills Survey - which was
commissioned by the Association of Technology Staffing Companies
(Atsco) and produced by iProfileStats - also highlights a move away
from permanent staffing towards interim posts.
Ann Swain, chief executive of Atsco, said, "Contract IT
personnel, such as Java programmers, have long been a feature of IT
departments but until very recently the IT director would have been
a full-time employee. That is now changing.
"IT departments are always under pressure to contain budget
growth and they are starting to be much more aggressive about
controlling the costs of their most senior staff."
The need for different skills at each stage of an IT project was
another factor pushing employers towards interim staffing, she
added.
Swain said interim directors were also being brought in as
troubleshooters where IT departments faced problems and to handle
the insourcing of previously outsourced services.
"We are seeing organisations recruiting interim IT directors to
take over IT projects which have been brought back in-house.
"Organisations are looking for the most cost-effective way to
rebuild skills and systems that were hollowed out in the
outsourcing process," said Swain.
The iProfile Skills Survey is produced each quarter and reports
on the value of IT staff and contractors, based upon their role,
skills, experience, location and industry sector.
