A new version of a virtual tape software storage system
could reduce an organisation's physical storage requirements by 25
times and offer faster back-up and recovery, according to its
manufacturer.
Hitachi Data Systems' Virtual Tape Library (VTL) can virtualise
and pool existing tape storage resources so that they can be used
more efficiently.
The product emulates a tape library, and tells existing back-up
applications to use disc drives, rather than tape, as their main
back-up medium. As a result, IT managers do not have to change
their existing back-up environment, policies, or procedures, said
the supplier.
The product line has been around for a year, but this version
features Diligent's Protectier VT with Hyperfactor software, which
is termed "data de-duplication technology". This basically
eliminates redundant data so that storage space is used more
efficiently.
Two versions are available, Virtual Tape Library Solutions with
VTF Open and Protectier VT for Open Systems environments, and VTF
Mainframe for mainframe environments.
The Virtual Tape Library works with Unix, Microsoft Windows, and
mainframe systems.
