A malicious website designed to look like an official
football World Cup site is distributing code that installs a Trojan
horse on users’ machines, security experts have
warned.
Websense Security Labs said the site carried a lead news item
about France captain Zinedine Zidane’s head butt on Italy’s Marco
Materazzi during the World Cup final. Unlike the official Fifa
World Cup 2006 site, the US-hosted malicious site refers to Zidane
as a “soccer star”.
Websense warned that visitors to any pages on the site could be
infected with a Trojan downloader. The site used the "Web Attacker"
toolkit, which allows hackers to install code that exploits users
based on the type of browser they use, the security firm said.
The code includes one of five different variants and includes
exploits for old and new vulnerabilities.
The malicious website comes hot on the heels of a World Cup
themed worm that emerged in June. The W32.Worm.Zade.A worm sent
itself out as a World Cup e-mail message.
