A stolen laptop computer containing the personal data of
26 million US military veterans and active service personnel has
been recovered by police.
The FBI is conducting a forensic investigation on the machine,
which was stolen from the home of an employee of the US Veterans
Affairs Department last month. It has made a preliminary
announcement that it believes the laptop’s database has not been
accessed since its theft.
The theft was set to prove expensive for the government to deal
with, as it was going to authorise the spending of $160m (£91m) to
provide credit checking facilities to all personnel affected by the
theft, after fears that they could become victims of identity
theft.
