Indian outsourcing firm Wipro has bought Portuguese IT company Enabler for £29m to help it target the retail IT outsourcing market.

Enabler is an Oracle integration specialist and was spun out of the IT department of leading Portuguese retailer Modelo Continente in 1997. It had sales of £20.5m last year and has 300 staff. The company has delivery centres in Brazil and Portugal, and customers in the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

Wipro’s acquisition is part of its strategy to widen its global presence and generate extra sales in vertical industry segments.

Enabler’s customer base includes more than a dozen Oracle-based retail implementations covering most of the Oracle Retail business software modules.

"Enabler’s proven track record in retail consulting and package implementation skills helps us strengthen our position as a solutions provider to large retailers globally.”

Wipro expects the acquisition of Enabler to be completed within a month.

Wipro’s revenues for the year ended 31 March increased by 30% year on year, and profit after tax grew by 27%.
