Duet, the product jointly developed by SAP and Microsoft
to link Office to MySAP ERP systems, will be one of the big themes
at this week’s Sapphire conference in Orlando, Florida. However,
user enthusiasm for product integration could be tempered by
concern about potential costs.
Duet, formerly known as Mendocino, provides functions such as
SAP time management using Outlook’s calendar, analytics via Excel,
and management sales accounts using Outlook’s contact address
book.
Supplier co-operation and product integration is essential, said
¬Ollie Ross, research manager at The Corporate IT Forum, which
represents the IT departments of blue chip UK firms. “The key
factor will be the cost, and whether businesses are prepared to
invest in the upgrades required to take advantage of such an
opportunity,” she said.
Butler Group research analyst Richard Edwards said, “If I were
an IT manager and had spent a small fortune on SAP and Office
licences, I would not expect to have to pay for Duet.”
A SAP spokeswoman said the minimum requirement for using Duet
would be Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Office 2003
Professional licences and an Employee User licence for MySAP ERP
2004.
