Almost half of women working in the IT industry believe
they are not being paid as much as their male counterparts,
according to a survey by IT suppliers organisation
Intellect.
Of the 435 female IT professionals asked whether they were being
paid fairly, 49% said they felt unequal in the pay stakes.
The survey also found that 62% of women believed their company
did not have a transparent pay structure, with 67% saying they did
not know whether their company had carried out an equal pay
audit.
Some 72% said their opinion of their employer would improve if
the organisation conducted such an audit. And 80% believed equal
pay audits should be compulsory.
Gillian Arnold, chair of Intellect’s Women in IT Forum, said,
“Whether the pay gap is perceived or real, if a woman believes that
her salary is less than that of her male peers, for the same work
and experience, then she will be prompted to look elsewhere.
“Transparency on salaries and benefits packages can help
enormously and can avoid unnecessary negative publicity and legal
fees.”
