Half of women working in the IT industry believe their
pay package is not comparable with that of their male
counterparts.
A survey published today by IT supplier body Intellect reveals
that 49% of women feel they are unequal in the pay stakes.
The survey of 435 women also found that 62% believed their
company did not have a transparent pay structure.
In addition, 67% said they didn’t know whether their company
carried out an equal pay audit.72% said they would have a higher
opinion of their employer if it did conduct such an audit,
while 80% believed equal pay audits should be compulsory.
Carrie Hartnell, private sector programme manager at Intellect,
said, “Intellect invites all interested parties to consider these
results carefully and to work together to find solutions to the
issues which have been highlighted.”
Gillian Arnold, chair of Intellect’s women in IT forum, said,
“Whether the pay gap is perceived or real, it is something which
will make women act.
“If a woman believes her salary is less than that of her male
peers, for the same work and experience, then she will be prompted
to look elsewhere. Transparency on salaries and benefits packages
can help enormously and avoid unnecessary publicity and legal
fees."
