The BBC is rolling out a project to provide a new IT
interoperability infrastructure with its IT services provider,
Siemens Business Services.
Siemens signed a 10-year, £2bn IT outsourcing deal with the BBC
in October 2004.
As part of the “Digital Fabric” programme, Siemens is analysing
the BBC’s top 200 applications and introducing an enterprise
architecture integration layer to allow legacy and future
technologies to work together.
The programme will use IBM WebSphere to build a service-oriented
architecture that can be tailored to the BBC’s needs and will allow
interoperability between IT systems, reduce the number of
applications and introduce standard middleware.
The IT overhaul is aimed at reducing costs and providing better
service delivery, with BBC staff able to share information and
technologies across all sites. The Digital Fabric programme will
also establish a standard platform for future development.
