AMD saw sales jump 70% and the company return to
profitability in the first quarter of the year.
The world’s number-two PC processor manufacturer had sales of
$1.33bn (£782m) in the quarter ended 26 March. The company also
posted net profits of $185m.
Last year, AMD posted a $17m loss in the first quarter, which
was mainly down to its loss-making Spansion flash memory company.
Spansion has now been spun off, enabling AMD to return to
profitability.
AMD said the improved performance also reflected its taking
market share away from the world’s leading chipmaker Intel. AMD
claimed it has taken market share away from Intel in the desktop,
laptop and server markets.
Intel recently warned that sales in its first quarter would be
down on expectations, partly because of greater competition in the
market.
Intel’s figures are due out next week.
