Great North Eastern Railway is to provide a Wi-Fi
internet service on its fleet of Intercity trains from August this
year, ahead of the original May 2007 deadline, the company
said.
Every GNER train will be fitted with satellite, GPRS and 3G
equipment, and passengers will be able to remain connected to the
network even while travelling through tunnels.
GNER trains send and receive communication signals via a
combination of roof-mounted satellite dish and mobile phone
antenna. The train's internal network creates a wireless hotspot in
each coach.
Access is free for first-class travellers and between £2.95 for
30 minutes and £9.95 for more than 180 minutes for all other
passengers.
