Red Hat has axed its Fedora Foundation less than a year
after its launch.
Fedora is Red Hat’s hobbyist version of its main Red Hat Linux
distribution. Fedora developers produce code and new applications
which could potentially be used in Red Hat’s enterprise Linux
platform.
Fedora Core 5 was recently launched, and the Fedora Foundation
was originally set up to deal with open source patent and
development issues connected to the work of Fedora programmers.
Red Hat said the Fedora Foundation was not dealing efficiently
with the amount of work created by the Fedora community, and it
will now offer them more direct support.
The Fedora Project Board, which consists of five Red Hat
employees and four outside developers, will now solely be
responsible for governing the Fedora Core.
Red Hat will also now increase its involvement in the
cross-company Open Invention Network, which deals with the
management and distribution of freely available open source
patents.
