The FBI has awarded Lockheed Martin a $305m (£179m)
six-year contract to oversee the development of its Sentinel case
management system.
FBI director Robert Mueller said, “Sentinel will strengthen the
FBI's capabilities by replacing its primarily paper-based reporting
system with an electronic system designed for information
sharing.”
The Sentinel project replaces the FBI’s failed $170m Virtual
Case File project, which the FBI scrapped last spring.
Sentinel is expected to cost a total of $425m over six years, a
figure that includes independent validation and verification to be
completed by another third-party contractor.
Sentinel will be a web-based case management system that will
deliver records, workflow and evidence management, along with
records search and reporting capabilities.
The Sentinel project has gone ahead despite earlier concerns at
the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General that the
system may lack cost controls.
