Research In Motion has produced a workaround for systems
covered by the patents it is disputing in the US.
The product, Blackberry Multi-Mode, will be pre-loaded onto all
new Blackberry handsets and is being incorporated into Blackberry
Enterprise Server software.
Existing users can install the workaround but RIM said it was
continuing to fight its patent dispute with NTP, which could lead
to the USBlackberry network being shut down.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is improving intellectual property dispute
protection on its rival mobile platform.
Microsoft has extended its intellectual property protection
programme for companies that develop hardware and software powered
by Microsoft Windows Embedded and Windows Mobile software. The
extended cover means Microsoft will defend manufacturers and
distributors against intellectual property claims in every country
in which it distributes or markets its Windows Mobile and Windows
Embedded products.
