How do I break into project management?
I am projects and IT manager for a small company where Prince2
is not tolerated. I want to move into a pure project management
role, but have had no success. I fail to understand how I cannot
get a job when there are reports of a shortage of IT project
managers.
I have over 15 years' management experience. I have successfully
managed projects of various sizes and types and I have Prince2 and
ITIL. How come I cannot seem to get the break to go into project
management?
Identify your use of methodologies
I am surprised, given your training, that you have found
securing a project management role a problem. While I appreciate
that your current company may not be the greatest supporter of
Prince2, you have obviously used it to your employer's commercial
success. Have you highlighted where this has been done
successfully?
Finding a pure project management-focused role has a lot to do
with finding a company where IT roles are clearly defined and
segregated. The larger the IT department, the more likely the role
will be "pure". You have a distinct advantage over other applicants
because you have a wealth of experience across the board.
Whether your own company chooses to recognise the efforts you
have made or not, you can boost your chances with them or a new
employer by identifying when and where you have used Prince2 and
ITIL. Where you have had to be flexible, run scenarios on how the
outcome could have been improved if the whole process had been
adopted. This clearly displays an in-depth understanding of the
methodology and how you have been able to utilise your learning
within a restricted environment. Add this to your CV or covering
letter and I am sure the response you get will be improved.
