The IT industry is set for generous wage hikes over the
next 15 years, according to the Future Earnings report from
training body City & Guilds.
The IT professionals who will prosper most in the years ahead
will be those skilled at installing, maintaining and servicing
technologies, said City & Guilds. Indeed, IT is set to become
one of the top manual skilled jobs, alongside plumbers and
electricians.
The City & Guilds' report identified "golden vocations" such
as IT, the building trade and electricians. People who are
successful in these professions could command salaries 30% above
the national average, it said.
The Future Earnings report set a national average salary of
£52,576 as a yardstick for the skilled professions. This excluded
vocational and academic management and senior officials in order to
provide a more realistic senior salary benchmark, said City &
Guilds.
Keith Brooker, director of group markets and products at City
& Guilds, said, "There will be an increasing demand for
vocational workers in the UK, so it is really encouraging to see
that there are clear incentives in terms of their earning
potential, which will ultimately attract more people into these
occupations over the coming years."
