Motorola has unveiled a 3G mobile data access point for
buildings which can allow companies to give multiple users access
to the internet using a mobile network.
The Motorola AXPT works rather like a Wi-Fi access point in
giving users shared access, although Wi-Fi is supported by fixed
line connections to the internet.
As well as supporting 3G, the Motorola system can also support
forthcoming HSDPA-based mobile networks which offer much higher
speeds than 3G.
As typical 3G speeds offer a single user no more than 384kbps to
access the internet and read files, Motorola may struggle to
support high numbers of users who need to download large
applications.
Vodafone has just signed a deal with Dell to get the PC
manufacturer to build HSDPA access into a line of its laptops that
will also support Vodafone’s forthcoming HSDPA network.
The AXPT system will be demonstrated at next month’s 3GSM World
Congress in Barcelona.
