Corel has launched a new version of its WordPerfect
Office package as a cheaper competitor to Microsoft’s Office
suite.
WordPerfect Office X3 includes features such as the ability to
import and export documents, spreadsheets and presentations to
Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF), plus improved e-mail
features.
WordPerfect is one of the few major competitors to Microsoft’s
popular Office suite, along with the likes of IBM’s Lotus Notes
platform, Sun Microsystems’ Star Office, and the fledgling open
source OpenOffice.org suite.
Corel’s WordPerfect Office X3 costs between £50 and £235.
Microsoft Office costs between £90 and £295.
Prices for both suites are dependent on the applications chosen
and the number of users.
Microsoft used to have a stake in Corel but it sold it at a loss
in 2003. Canadian company Corel is now owned by a venture capital
firm.
